Sunday, May 21st, and we are at the BS Guernsey showground on the grass in the airport arena for clear round jumping followed by a rally. Weather is sunny but there is a strong breeze, which unfortunately means I’ve got a jacket on! Doesn’t help that I am photographing from under the trees in the shade.
Clear round jumping starts with cross-poles, which is always a challenge to photograph as the pony/horses spend little to no time in the air and instead just trot over the pole. However, occasionally the pony/horse over jumps, much to the surprise of the rider, and quite a spectacular image can be captured.

Above we have a nice example of a rider and horse successfully clearing a fence in the second class of the day, the 40cm class, and I was lucky to capture the moment of take-off with the horse in full-extension.
After the clear round jumping the Seniors stared at 65cm and topped out at 1.25m with the course builder throwing everything at them with a triple, water-jump and three-bar, much to the ‘enjoyment’ of one particular competitor. All good practice though for not only the Spring Show next weekend but the Guernsey Horse of the Year Show, which is at the end of August.
